    What the rate represents

Rates are the average annualised agreed rate on new loans to households for house purchase, as reported by the central bank or national statistics office. They are not teaser rates or best-buy offers.

    Non-resident borrowing

Non-residents are usually quoted a higher rate than the domestic average and face lower loan-to-value limits. Country pages note the local practice where we have it.

    Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners get a mortgage abroad?
In most of the markets we cover, yes, though at lower loan-to-value ratios and higher rates than residents. A minority of markets restrict lending to residents entirely.
    Are rates fixed or variable?
It depends on the country: some markets are dominated by long fixings, others by variable or short-fix products. The country pages describe the prevailing product.
